Saint Lucia Athletics Association hosts Awards Ceremony

DENZEL PHILLIPS, NAYA JULES AMONG TOP ATHLETES RECOGNIZED AT THE PRESTIGIOUS EVENT.

The Saint Lucia Athletics Association (SLAA) hosted its highly anticipated awards ceremony under the theme “Celebrating Excellence: Celebrating the Spirit of Athletics on Saturday, 25 January 2025, at 7:00 p.m. at the VIP Players Pavilion, Daren Sammy Cricket Ground. The evening brought together athletes, coaches, administrators, technical officials, sponsors and supporters to celebrate the achievements and contributions of individuals who have propelled athletics in Saint Lucia to new heights for the year 2024.

President Dora Henry’s Remarks underscored the significance of athletics in building community and fostering national pride while celebrating the monumental Olympic Year and share the six pillars of focus for her Executive.  Honorable Kenson Casimir, Minister of Youth Development and Sports, also shared words of encouragement and support for the nation’s athletes.

The highlight of the evening was the presentation of awards recognizing the accomplishments of athletes, coaches, and officials who represented Saint Lucia at regional and international competitions in 2024. These included representatives from the CARIFTA Games, RAN Under 17 Games, World U20 Championships, World Indoor Championships, and the Olympic Games.

Special awards were presented to individuals and clubs for their outstanding contributions, including:

  • Coach of the Year: Mr. Cuthbert Modeste
  • Technical Official of the Year: Mr. Andrew Wayne Rameau
  • Administrator of the Year: Ms. Brendaline Descartes 
  • Long Service Award: Mr. Theodore Henry Bailey

The night also celebrated the achievements of road runners, with awards presented to top performers, including Mr. Jason Sayers, Mr. Neville Dupre, Michael Biscette and Mr. Marbeq Edgar.

The evening’s feature address, delivered by Guest Speaker, Mr. Ajani Lebourne, inspired attendees with his reflections on resilience, dedication, and the pursuit of excellence in athletics. 

A captivating "Year in Review" video presentation highlighted the accomplishments of the 2024 competition year, followed by a lively performance from 2024 Calypso King, Mr. Dezral Long, who entertained the audience with his winning song.

The ceremony concluded with the presentation of the Prestigious Awards, recognizing the island’s top athletes:

  • Juvenile Athletes of the Year: Ricardo Mann & Jady Emmanuel
  • Junior Athletes of the Year: Denzel Phillips & Naya Jules
