Prime Minister Chastanet thanked the British government for its continued commitment to Saint Lucia.
Prime Minister Allen M. Chastanet officially welcomed Commissioner Steve McCready to Saint Lucia during a courtesy call on Thursday, March 23. He said the appointment of a resident British Commissioner to Saint Lucia was reassuring.
Following the meeting Prime Minister Chastanet expressed condolences to the UK over the recent attacks at the Houses of Parliament in Westminster. Four persons reportedly died in the attack.
“The Government and People of Saint Lucia received with sadness the news of the deadly attack which claimed innocent lives and left many wounded. We offer prayers for the families, loved ones and friends of all who are affected by this senseless tragedy,” he said. “This was not just an attack on the British Parliament but an attack on democracy. There are those amongst us who are influenced by hate and extremist views and who seek to instill fear and division. We condemn all acts of terrorism and stand in solidarity with you as you seek to bring those who perpetrate such repugnant acts to justice.
“We express hope for healing and a renewed sense of determination to conquer the dreadful scourge of extremism. The government and people of Saint Lucia continue to support all who promote peace and unity.”
Mr. McCready thanked the prime minister for his words of support and condolence.
“It is very clear at a time like this to have friends on the international stage is very important to the UK,” Mr. McCready said. “I am very grateful to the Prime Minister for his clear expression of support. That friendship means an awful lot to our country at this time.
“I would also like to express my condolences to the Prime Minister and the people of Saint Lucia for the tragic event that happened at Cul-de-Sac earlier this week,” the British Commissioner said, referring to a March 21 explosion at a quarry in Farrand Estate, Cul de Sac, that claimed the lives of three and injured several others. “Our wishes, our prayers and our support go to the victims of that event.”
The British Commissioner said he looks forward to working with the Prime Minister and partners all across the country in the coming years “to develop the strong and important relationship between the UK and Saint Lucia.”
